CBD and Anxiety

Can it Help?

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illnesses in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older, or 18.1% of the population every year. (ADAA.org, n.d.)

Even though CBD (cannabidiol) is still emerging into the natural health supplement world, there is mounting evidence that it holds a great many benefits for a myriad of health issues.

Anxiety is one of those. In fact, a recent poll showed specific reasons why people are taking CBD products, the top three are;

55% use it for relaxation

50% use it for anxiety

45% use it for sleep

In the past several years there have been numerous studies conducted that have shown that CBD does help in relieving feelings of general anxiety. CBD has also shown benefits for people with other forms of anxiety, such as social anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder(PTSD).

A study involving 72 participants that were published in January, researched whether CBD can help improve anxiety and sleep quality. The results of the study showed a decrease in anxiety symptoms in 57 of the study participants and noted that CBD may hold benefits for anxiety-related disorders. The researchers indicated that larger, controlled clinical research studies are needed to confirm this initial finding. (- reported in a Mayo clinic Q & A article)

How CBD oil combats anxiety, isn’t known exactly, but it’s thought to work with a receptor in your brain called CB1. Researchers believe that the interactions between CBD and the CB1 receptor, work to alter serotonin signals. In case you’re not sure what serotonin is, I didn’t either so here is the Wikipedia definition.

serotonin is a neurotransmitter. Its chemical name is 5-Hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT. It is derived from tryptophan. Serotonin is found in all vertebrates, mainly in the gastrointestinal tract, blood platelets, and central nervous system. ... It is believed to regulate mood, intestinal activity and appetite, memory, and sleep.

Most of us experience a form of anxiety at some point, it is good to know that CBD oil has helped thousands of people manage their anxiety. It is a proven safe, natural, and effective alternative to taking pharmaceuticals that come with an array of very harsh side effects.

The amount of CBD to take for anxiety varies, some users prefer to take 10-20 milligrams twice a day while others prefer to take higher amounts. Your needs may be different. You should start out with small amounts and increase every 2-3 days until you feel the desired effect. Most CBD products will have the recommended dosage on the labels and it’s best to follow those.

Once you reach your desired effect, remain at that level as part of your daily CBD regimen.

If you suffer from any anxiety disorder, it is important to consult with your medical professional before starting the use of CBD.
